Naturally, a city with a history as colourful as London’s is bound to retain a number of curious events and ceremonies taking place over the course of a year. The (old) City of London in particular relishes the opportunity to put on the ceremonial garb for an obscure annual event (and an opportunity for a lavish meal afterwards)

So here is a selection of annual events (including one or two which are sadly no longer a part of the London calendar) ranging from the genuinely ancient (The Lord Mayor’s Show, The Knollys Rose Rent Ceremony, Beating the Bounds…), to those that appear to be ancient, which aren’t quite (Twelfth Night, Jack in the Green, October Plenty…), to those which may well become considered ancient a few decades from now (Grimaldi Service, Parliamentary Pancake Race, etc).
